Pascal, Pacers and Playoffs with Kevin Bowen

In this episode, we welcome Kevin Bowen from 'The Fan' in Indianapolis to discuss the Indiana Pacers' surprising journey to the NBA Finals. The Pacers had a remarkable season with 50 wins, overcoming teams like Milwaukee, New York, and Cleveland. Despite strong performances, they narrowly lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game Finals series. Key highlights include the impressive contributions from players such as Tyrese Halliburton and Pascal Siakam [03:29].

Looking ahead to the 2026 season [01:55], challenges include Halliburton's Achilles injury and potential tactical adjustments. The episode also touches on the broader landscape of the Eastern Conference [05:17] and a brief update on the Indianapolis Colts' offseason, focusing on Anthony Richardson's shoulder recovery and the team's strategic outlook [07:18].

Welcome into another episode . We have a special guest joining us

2

:

from the state of Indiana, the

epicenter of the basketball universe.

3

:

'cause we have the WNBA on right now

featuring Indiana Fever and Caitlyn Clark.

4

:

But most recently we had the

paces in the NBA taking all before

5

:

them going to the NBA finals.

6

:

They took the Oklahoma City

Thunder all the way to seven games.

7

:

They had quite the season, so joining

us to talk about that and more.

8

:

It's front of the show.

9

:

Kevin Bowen from the fan in Indianapolis.

10

:

Kevin, how you doing Kevin?

11

:

How you doing?

12

:

Kevin Bowen: Doing good, Neil.

13

:

Thanks for having me on as always.

14

:

PSP: It was been quite a season.

15

:

The Pacers had 50 wins.

16

:

They took out Milwaukee.

17

:

New York and Cleveland along the way.

18

:

Did you expect a season that they

had to get so far towards the finals

19

:

and take the thunder to seven?

20

:

Kevin Bowen: Yeah, I'd be I'd be

lying to you if I thought they

21

:

were gonna make a run all the way

to the final game of the season.

22

:

The 50 wins I actually thought that I

made a little bit of a preseason wager

23

:

on 50 or more wins for the Pacers.

24

:

So that wasn't, stunning to me.

25

:

I know they got off to a slow start

with Andrew and Emhart and Aaron

26

:

East Smith both banged up, but.

27

:

The playoff run, especially starting

that Cal series, I think, taking

28

:

care of Milwaukee given their

injury situation, wasn't that crazy.

29

:

Maybe in five was a little bit more

unexpected, but then, what they did to

30

:

Cleveland I thought was pretty thorough.

31

:

And then, when Halliburton hits that

shot in game, one of the Nicks series.

32

:

I think that kind of flipped that series,

towards Indiana pretty significantly.

33

:

And then obviously when they got into the

finals, certainly Vegas did not expect

34

:

them to take Oklahoma City to seven and

the ultimate what if there in game seven?

35

:

So it's one of the more unexpected runs.

36

:

Again, 50 wins, not that crazy,

but, getting all the way to June

37

:

22nd and game seven of the finals.

38

:

Yeah, I think unless you're a

unless you're Boomer the mascot, I

39

:

don't think you're expecting that.

40

:

PSP: Now they were pretty clinical.

41

:

The finals is actually the

only series that went to seven.

42

:

As you said, the Milwaukee team that they

beat was a little bit happy, but they

43

:

beat the calves and the Knicks in six.

44

:

They were quite clinical there.

45

:

How do you see 2026 looking?

46

:

Obviously Tyree, Halliburton

has an Achilles injury.

47

:

How do you see 2026 looking for the paces?

48

:

Moving forward and forward.

49

:

Kevin Bowen: Yeah.

50

:

For how joyous of a season it was

and how unbelievable of a run it was.

51

:

And so many great moments.

52

:

What happened there in game seven is

just such an excruciating way to end it.

53

:

You almost feel like they lost two

championships in a way on Sunday in, in,

54

:

in the sense of, obviously you lost game

seven, but then Halliburton being out for.

55

:

All of next season.

56

:

We had Rick Carlisle on our show earlier

this week and he said, obviously unlikely

57

:

he's going to play here coming up.

58

:

So that's a big question.

59

:

Now, how do you handle the off season?

60

:

Do maybe not push all the chips

into the middle of the table?

61

:

They don't have a lot of decisions

to make, but I think it unpacks so

62

:

much of the questions you had asked

yourself over the past, probably

63

:

handful of months as an organization.

64

:

Now moving forward, of course, what

does Halliburton look like individually?

65

:

When he does return, I don't

think he has a game that, the

66

:

Achilles will cripple him.

67

:

I think he's an elite shooter.

68

:

He is an elite passer.

69

:

He is an elite facilitator.

70

:

He's not some, small point guard that,

relies on explicit athletic ability

71

:

to do the heavy lifting for him.

72

:

I think back to when Victora Depot

got hurt for the Pacers a handful

73

:

of years ago as he was having an

all star ascent and he was a smaller

74

:

guard that was a streaky shooter that.

75

:

Needed that, peak explosive athleticism

and, when he suffered that knee injury

76

:

I think that kind of unfortunately for

him started the downfall to his career.

77

:

I don't put Halliburton in that

same sort of box, but nonetheless,

78

:

there are obviously still some major

questions that you know, he's going

79

:

to have to answer and organizationally

they will have to answer as well.

80

:

PSP: Now, one question,

the organization answered.

81

:

Not this season, but the season before

was the trade for Pascal, aka they brought

82

:

him in from Toronto and I feel like this

postseason was his national introduction.

83

:

He did win a championship in Toronto in

:

84

:

I feel like audiences got a real feel

for the Pascal aka experience the way

85

:

that he was able to feed off of Ty's Reib

work with Miles Turner in the Post and

86

:

. Did win the Eastern Conference finals.

87

:

MVP.

88

:

Tell us a little bit about how you've

seen him come into the Paces organization

89

:

as well as the contract that he signed.

90

:

Do you feel like the paces

have got a good deal there?

91

:

Kevin Bowen: Yeah, I do.

92

:

I I think you look at AKA and,

he just brings an adult mindset.

93

:

I don't know if that

maybe is the best way.

94

:

To describe it, but I think as a guy that,

when you need a bucket late he's the guy

95

:

that, when the game slows down in the

playoffs, he can provide that for you.

96

:

He's something, somebody that kinda

has a bit of an old school game to him.

97

:

He is very mid rangey and, again,

similar to Halliburton, he is

98

:

not necessarily relying on crazy

athleticism or necessarily gonna

99

:

hit, whatever, three or four threes.

100

:

But when things do bo down I

think he can provide a pretty

101

:

consistent scoring presence and

defensively does enough for you.

102

:

Obviously he's gonna take on a bigger kind

of scouting report role, coming up next

103

:

season and what is he 30, 31 years old?

104

:

You would like to think that when

Halliburton gets back, he would still

105

:

have a couple years left for you.

106

:

And the championship pedigree is probably,

honestly, that's probably an area that.

107

:

I know I underestimated him a little bit.

108

:

Just how great of a leader he is.

109

:

And I think that has been really key.

110

:

And certainly they will need and

rely on his voice and his presence

111

:

coming up next season as well.

112

:

PSP: Yes.

113

:

See, Kom will definitely be asked to

provide a lot more, not only in the

114

:

box score, but also as you say, with

the intangibles such as leadership

115

:

and the voice in the locker room.

116

:

The Eastern Conference, though, is

seemingly open when you can see that the

117

:

Knicks essentially fired their coach after

losing to the paces, which is interesting.

118

:

Boston lost Jason Tatum in a not too

dissimilar fashion to Tyrus, Halle Briton,

119

:

and we might not see him next season.

120

:

So the cars are still at

the top of the conference.

121

:

Detroit's there.

122

:

Orlando's there.

123

:

Do you feel like the Pacers need

to do much to stay in the top

124

:

four next season, or do you feel

like it's a pretty open race?

125

:

Kevin Bowen: Yeah, honestly, that

might be the greatest thing going to

126

:

the Pacers favor right now, which is,

you're obviously stretching a bit when

127

:

you go there, but it is the reality

of, I think, how the East looks.

128

:

You just laid it out there.

129

:

There are so many question marks in

regards to teams that you would've.

130

:

Thought would be in the top of the east.

131

:

The Darius Garland tow injury

obviously is a big one for Cleveland.

132

:

From a coaching standpoint with New York,

obviously the Tatum injury certainly

133

:

the Halliburton injury, Philadelphia.

134

:

It seemingly, it's if they could just

stay healthy sooner or later we gotta

135

:

stop saying that and just live in reality.

136

:

Orlando and Detroit,

it's they haven't really.

137

:

Been on this stage just yet

for me, proven its standpoint.

138

:

So I think those are all points

where I look at the East, I'm

139

:

like, can you outright name four or

five teams that will certainly be

140

:

better than the Pacers next season?

141

:

I don't think that's a very easy exercise.

142

:

Now I'm not holding my breath and

I'm not expecting the Pacers to be

143

:

playing on, June 22nd next year.

144

:

But I do think that is a part of why.

145

:

There, is if there was a thought, and

I don't think there's a thought to

146

:

be clear organizationally about, hey,

should we tank and should you try and

147

:

get that lottery picked to help how

it burn out, in the next iteration.

148

:

I don't really view, I.

149

:

The Eastern Conference providing that,

or nor do I think the Pacers would do

150

:

that, the east just, I think it'll be

too mediocre to live in that area there.

151

:

So I think they'll rely a lot of their

in-house, see bigger roles for Andrew

152

:

Emhart and Benedict Mather especially.

153

:

And you'll see what those

young guys can do for you.

154

:

PSP: Definitely a strong

influence there from the Canadians

155

:

Mhar and Benedict Matton.

156

:

And we might see another Mhar

in the league very shortly.

157

:

Beyond that, there's

free agency coming up.

158

:

There's a lot of good stuff in the NBA.

159

:

Kevin, you are the Indianapolis, the voice

of the Indianapolis sports scene for us,

160

:

what's going on with Colts off season.

161

:

Just quickly.

162

:

Kevin Bowen: Yeah, we'll start

Trend Camp here in a few weeks.

163

:

The big storyline exiting in the spring

was Anthony Richardson had to be shut

164

:

down from throwing due to that right

shoulder surgery he had, 20 months prior.

165

:

So he did not participate in the

Final Seven team practices they had.

166

:

He did participate in the first two,

but again, missed out on the final

167

:

seven, so that's really valuable time.

168

:

That he missed for a player That

I would argue there's no player

169

:

in the NFL that has to prove his

availability more than Richardson.

170

:

So I would say right now

Daniel Jones is the leader.

171

:

We'll see if Richardson can get back

in throwing early in training camp.

172

:

That's the hope.

173

:

That's the thought.

174

:

But again, there's gonna be a ramp up

period for him and when that happens.

175

:

How much ramp up period is there?

176

:

How real of a competition will that be?

177

:

I think those are all

questions you have going into.

178

:

What is a very.

179

:

Critical season for Chris Bow, his

ninth as a general manager, Shane

180

:

Steichen's third as a head coach.

181

:

Obviously the unfortunate Jim Ey

passing earlier this year you know now

182

:

his oldest daughter, Carly Erse Gordon

makes most of the calls or I think

183

:

will have the the main voice in that.

184

:

And, I think it's a critical evaluation

point for the GM and the head coach.

185

:

PSP: We'll watch the space and we

can always listen to your space.

186

:

Kevin Bowen: On 1 0 7 5, the fan.

187

:

Where else can we find your work, Kevin?

188

:

Yeah.

189

:

Again, like you said,

1 0 7 5, the fan.com,

190

:

we can find a lot of written content.

191

:

And then a social wise K Bowen 10 70, so

it's K Bowen, B-O-W-E-N 10 70 on social.

192

:

PSP: Okay, fantastic.

193

:

We always appreciate your time

194

:

Kevin Bowen: you bet.

195

:

Thanks for having me as always.

196

:

Appreciate it.
